Cataract Complication Management Simulation Course

Hands-on surgical simulation course focused on the management of intraoperative complications in cataract surgery.

This course is designed to support the development of surgical control in complex cataract cases through a structured, stepwise simulation approach.

Activities are conducted in a controlled wet-lab environment with a strong focus on complication recognition, instrument handling, and intraoperative decision-making.

Course Aims

This course provides participants the opportunity to engage with the management of intraoperative cataract complications in a controlled simulation setting. By the end of the course, participants will have:

  • Examined representative complication scenarios — including posterior capsule rupture, vitreous prolapse, and lens fragment displacement — on simulated material.
  • Practiced anterior vitrectomy using bimanual technique in a controlled wet-lab setting.
  • Worked through intraocular lens exchange — including explantation of the existing IOL and re-implantation of a new lens — on an artificial eye model.
  • Explored a stepwise decision-making framework for complication scenarios in a controlled simulation setting.

What You Will Practice

  • Anterior vitrectomy techniques
  •  Intraocular lens (IOL) exchange
  • Stepwise management of complex scenarios

Simulation Format

  • Hands-on wet-lab practice
  • Small-group format
  • Direct supervision
  • Repeated surgical practice
  • Ex vivo ocular tissue and artificial eye models.
